What’s The Difference Between Septic and Sewer?

February 28, 2023 Published by Leave your thoughts

When you’re looking to buy or build a new home, you might want to consider what type of wastewater treatment system your property will use. The two options – septic systems and sewer systems – each have their pros and cons.

What Is A Sewer System?

In most sanitary sewer systems, the wastewater is transported by gravity to a treatment plant where it can be treated and then discharged into the environment. The main benefit of using a sanitary sewer system is that waste is treated and then safely returned to the environment. However, the cost of installing this system can be more expensive than a septic tank or private sewer system, which are designed to dispose of sewage in an environmentally friendly manner.

What Is A Septic System?

Septic systems are an underground wastewater treatment structure for homes without access to a sewer system. They consist of a septic tank and a leach field that work together to treat waste before it’s released back into the ground. A septic system can be an important part of your home’s health and well-being. It helps remove odors, bacteria and other impurities in water that comes from your bathing, showering, and washing. The septic tank in your system is designed to hold wastewater and break it down by naturally occurring processes, such as bacterial action. Septic systems are a great option for rural areas that do not have sewer lines. They are more affordable than city sewer systems, and they can last for decades if they are kept up.

Which One Should I Get?

While both systems work to dispose of waste and protect water quality, there are some major differences between the two. As a recap, sewer systems are a network of pipes and pumping stations that collect wastewater from homes and businesses and transport it to wastewater treatment plants. Septic systems, on the other hand, are an underground system that treats wastewater on site and helps keep drinking water clean. Depending on your personal preferences, you may be better off choosing one over the other. But in some cases, a septic system is the only choice for your property. However, in other situations, a sewer system is generally the preferred option.
